Ho-Chunk Living Site in the Big Woods, east of St. Lucas
Nearby German farm families recall Ho-Chunk living in this massive woodland a century ago. With settlement the nearby farm communities divided up the woods into small 10 acre patches to provide firewood and lumber for the farmers.
Today German farm family members (4th generation) recall their grandmothers providing foodstuffs and an occasional pie to the Indians. This massive woodland provided shelter and opportunity for turkey and deer hunting plus open spaces for gardens for corn, squash and beans.
Most importantly, it provided isolation and protection from the larger society during a long historical century when being indigenous people was a stigma and discrimination was frequenent.
