Dvorak & Kickapoo Encounters - Spillville

Kickapoo Encounter Dvorak in Spillville

While in Spillville in the summer of 1893, the famous Czech composer, Anton Dvorak was drawn to the music of the travelling Kickapoo Indians  who provided shows of their music and dances, and of course, their healing powers and medicines. A surviving poster of this event illustrates a substantial number of Kickapoo medicine men in the travelling show.  These shows were wildly popular as settler farmers could forget their tedious hard labor for a couple of hours and be entertained by these mysterious indigenous people. Dvorak incorporated their rhythms in his music, from his 1893 summer stay in Spillville, Iowa, and New York City.
