Treaty Rock - Westgate
The Great Seal of the Ho-Chunk Nation and Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska

Treaty Rock, Westgate, Iowa

This very large erratic rock is on the open prairie near Westgate in Fremont Township, Fayette County, Iowa.  It served as a key reference point for these land cession treaties between  the Federal Government and the Sioux and the Sauk and Fox. In addition, the Federal Government, the War Department forced the movement of the Winnebago or Ho-Chunk from Wisconsin into the Neutral Zone in 1841.

The treaties were:

  • Sac and Fox Cession of July 15, 1830
  • Sioux Cession of July 15, 1830
  • Blackhawk Purchase of 1832
  • 2nd Blackhawk Purchase of October 21, 1837
  • Cession of 1842

These treaties are documented in the Annals of Iowa, Vol VII, No. 4, January 1906. This rock marked the southern boundary of the Neutral Zone. Today the rock’s importance during that turbulent period of history, is largely forgotten.
